Paradise close to a nature park in a hotel at the Weissensee
The Weissensee is the purest and highest swimming lake in the Alps, located in the south-west of Carinthia in Austria at 930 m above sea level, in the heart of Weissensee Nature Park. The lake bears this name (“Weissensee” means literally “white lake”) due to the chalky rocks along its banks.
It measures 11.6 km in length, is filled with water pure enough to drink, and two-thirds of it is completely undeveloped. There is no such thing as through-traffic or motorboats! No coincidence, then, that this lake is also nicknamed “nature’s playground”. It is a natural jewel on the sunny side of the Alps, enjoying the benefits of a mild Mediterranean climate.
In summer, the turquoise waters of the lake reach temperatures as high as 24° Celsius, inviting you to go swimming, windsurfing, diving and sailing. In wintertime, the Weissensee is transformed into Europe’s biggest natural ice rink – an Eldorado for skaters, ice golfers, “ice stock” and so much more.
In springtime and autumn, you can enjoy this unique natural paradise out hiking, mountain biking and fishing. Paddle your way across the lake with our rowing boats, and reenergize amid this pristine nature sanctuary and glorious landscapes.
